Η ερευνητική μας ομάδα, από τις πλέον γνωστές στο χώρο της πνευμονικής εμβολής διεθνώς, διερευνά, σε συνεργασία με το κέντρο θρόμβωσης και αιμόστασης (Center for Thrombosis and Hemostasis – CTH) στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Mainz Γερμανίας και ένα από τα μεγαλύτερα διεθνή δίκτυα κλινικών ερευνητικών κέντρων στη θρόμβωση και θρομβοεμβολική νόσο στην Ευρώπη και Βόρεια Αμερική (PEITHO / HI-PEITHO network), ένα ευρύ φάσμα σύγχρονων προτεραιοτήτων στην αντιμετώπιση της οξείας και χρόνιας θρομβοεμβολικής νόσου. Συγκεκριμένα πεδία της τρέχουσας ερευνητικής δραστηριότητάς μας είναι:

1. Διαστρωμάτωση κινδύνου της οξείας πνευμονικής εμβολής (ΠΕ) με την αναζήτηση και ταυτοποίηση νέων βιοχημικών ή απεικονιστικών δεικτών καθώς και την αξιολόγηση συνδυασμού ευρημάτων σε προγνωστικά scores
2. Αντιμετώπιση της οξείας ΠΕ ενδιάμεσου κινδύνου με θεραπεία επαναιμάτωσης (reperfusion treatment), είτε ως αμιγώς φαρμακευτική αγωγή (ενδοφλέβια θρομβόλυση) είτε ως διακαθετηριακή εμβολεκτομή με ή χωρίς χρήση τοπικής έγχυσης θρομβολυτικού φαρμάκου
3. Αντιμετώπιση της ΠΕ χαμηλού κινδύνου σε περιπατητική βάση μετά από βραχεία (μικρότερη του 48ώρου) παραμονή στο νοσοκομείο
4. Διάρκεια της αντιπηκτικής αγωγής και δευτερογενής πρόληψη υποτροπών φλεβοθρόμβωσης και εμβολής
5. Εξελιγμένα πρωτόκολλα βραχύτερης πρωτογενούς θρομβοπροφύλαξης στην ορθοπεδική και συγκεκριμένα στην ολική αρθροπλαστική του ισχύου, σε συνδυασμό με ταχεία κινητοποίηση και εξιτήριο εντός 5 ημερών (fast track surgery)
6. Συστηματική παρακολούθηση του ασθενούς μετά από την οξεία φάση της ΠΕ με σκοπό την πρόληψη και έγκαιρη διάγνωση χρόνιας θρομβοεμβολικής νόσου
7. Ανάλυση δεικτών ποιότητας ζωής και φαρμακοοικονομικών δεδομένων για την καλύτερη κατανόηση της συνολικής επιβάρυνσης της σωματικής και ψυχικής υγείας των ασθενών καθώς και της οικονομικής επιβάρυνσης των συστημάτων υγείας από την ΠΕ σε βάθος χρόνου.

Για την επίτευξη των ανωτέρω στόχων διεξάγονται

• Πολυεθνικές προοπτικές τυχαιοποιημένες μελέτες με ομάδα ελέγχου (randomized cntrolled trials)
• Πολυκεντρικές παρεμβατικές (interventional) και παρατηρησιακές (observational) προοπτικές μελέτες κοόρτης και
• Επιδημιολογικές μελέτες με ανάλυση παγκόσμιων (π.χ. της ΠΟΥ) τραπεζών δεδομένων.
